Challenge Two

For this challenge, I began by designing a pair of shoes by being inspired by a pair of vintage earrings, to fit my model “Goldmine” who is an AvantGuard doll from Integrity. I chose the colors of black and gold from the base of the earrings and made the inner soles metallic faux leather with real leather bases. The uppers are made from the earrings and gold metallic elastic. The heels are made from stacking black coral beads on a wider wooden bead base.

For the fashion part of this challenge, I decided to test myself. I had a lower (human size) skirt from silk dress with an interesting autumn print, which mirrored several of the patterns from the shoes. I didn’t draft a pattern, just pinned, draped and cut around the style I was going to achieve.  The back has a slight train. The lining is cut to fit Goldmine’s figure while the outside has a more bohemian flare.

The finishing touches are matching vintage earrings and necklace of vintage clasp and black coral beads all to match the shoes.

Challenge Three

When this challenge was first announced, I immediately thought of
using a Wilde Imagination doll as they not only were made for
embellished clothing but demand it! I am using Evangeline Ghastly as
a model, in a fashion that is in her style but with my own
interpretation. Evangeline is wearing a fashion called “The
Rhinestone Pirate”. I would categorize this fashion as “Gothic
Light”!  (Literally)
The pieces are as follows:

Pale pink georgette bed jacket with lace embellishment and silver
ribbon sequin and bead accent. Closes with hook and eye. Collar can
be worn up as a portrait collar or low. Seams are all enclosed and
lace edges are turned twice for security.

Pale pink georgette bloomers with lace knee embellishment and silver
and bead bow. Crotch seams are enclosed, leg seams are “fray
checked” and zig zagged.

Silver vinyl corset with lace shows repetitive “V” shapes with a
bead accent in for “Vangie” the nickname for Evangeline. I used
the lace to cover the raw edge of the vinyl, as it did not need
complete lining. Closes with snaps in the back.

Pink  & silver shoes with chrome heel, hand made with pink leather,
silver vinyl and a recycled “heel” from the tips of a ballpoint pen.

Silver and pink Rhinestone skull & cross bones necklace.

Pink Rhinestone earrings to echo the Rhinestone Pirate theme.

All of the main pieces are embellished with matching pale pink lace
and silver bows. Evangeline’s wig from Dollcis was one of the
deciding factors on the color scheme, in that it is a blend of
silver, pink and purple highlights and complements all of the
clothing and embellishments.

Challenge Four

Avante Guarde Fashion to me is an artistic expression more than creating fashion. It often has a message or meaning and is usually more “art” than clothing…I have titled this fashion “Pure”, it symbolizes water, being the essence of life in various forms of liquid, frozen and steam. Goldmine (Integrity’s AG) has bravely volunteered for this assignment. Since the focus is on the fashion instead of the “person”, I have dressed her without her wig for more impact.

I wanted to use unusual materials to create this challenge. The main part of the garment is seamless and is from a vegetable produce plastic that 3 heads of garlic came in! I wove white satin ribbon (to symbolize moving water) at intervals to make the cloth and finished the ends with “crystal” beads  (recycled beads from a vintage sweater).  The headpiece is made from the base of a plastic soya sauce dispenser with the netting from the garlic bag as a veil. I chose to cut this in a diagonal to follow the nose to add interest. The top is covered in “crystal” beads to symbolize ice. The detached collar can be worn up or down. It is made from ribbon recycled from a floral arrangement, feathers and tulle and closes with a snap accented by a real crystal fragment. The feathers symbolize water in its vapor element.  The shoes are recreated from a Gene ribbon shoe and have had “crystal” platforms added with a clear vamp across the foot to keep the line clear from shoe to hem. The earrings add to the theme with crystal and beads, the fingerless gloves on the hands keep the fabric element in play.

Challenge Five

Just as we were given this new challenge, the news came out that Gene would no longer be produced after 2010. I immediately felt that I wanted to have Gene “star” on the Red Carpet as only Gene can… Now there have been many interpretations of Gene already done so it gave me a further challenge to come up with something fresh and different.

The name of this fashion is “Wish Upon a Star”. I chose the color scheme of Gold and Crème as it is a winning combination. The shape of the gown has Victorian touches without being a replica from that era. The lining gives it the main structure and is a totally different shape than the outside of the gown.  Both fabrics used have very different characteristics and play off each other with softness and strength. I used the gold striping in the opaque silk to add interest with the draping. The sleeves are separate from the gown and it can be worn with or without them with the same going with the detached bustle. The gold lame is a vintage metallic fabric with strong texture. The accessories have a star motif to symbolize our “Star on the Red Carpet”. I made a matching purse for Gene to carry her acceptance speech for when she wins her award.

Challenge Six

This has been my favorite challenge so far! I love Hubert Givenchy and Oleg Cassini designs! It was so much fun to research. I also kept in mind that the challenge was to create a fashion “inspired” by Audrey not to make a re-creation of a fashion she actually wore. This is a “modern” Audrey!

My model is the lovely Poppy Parker. I wish I had a dark haired Poppy but used this one with her hair tied into a ponytail at the back. I also incorporated a ballet feel into my fashion with the top’s neckline, rose decoration and the ballet style flats. Instead of creating a scarf as a separate piece, I made a pleated, ruffled collar on the boxy, cropped jacket to highlight Poppy’s facial features. The jacket and Capri pants are made with the “inside” of the satin fabric while the top and collar are the outside of the same fabric as I wanted a more monochromatic feel to the fashion with only a slight accent color of green as minimal touches. The top under the jacket gives a cummerbund effect at a distance without the bulk of a belt. The hat is blocked felt, as I wanted a seamless cloche style hat that was popular with Audrey to add interest to her face without a lot of extra width.  The purse has the rose motif and is made from the same felt as the shoes and hat with a green ribbon crocheted handle. The genuine peridot stone chip earrings complete the green accent. The sun glasses were "borrowed" from Going Public Eugenia.

Challenge Seven

I have not watched the TV show based on this challenge ( and would probably only like it for the fashions) but in my research imagined a character of a wealthy woman business owner who is invited to the Christmas party because of her status.

For this challenge, my fashion focuses on texture and luxurious fabrics. I wanted each piece to stand on it's own as well as work within the complete look.  I started my design with a tiny scrap of 1960's metallic fabric and wanted to have opposite texture and color for the remainder. The mink (recycled from a vintage collar is lined in silk) and silk chiffon skirt are the same tone of off white. The hat combines the fur and fabric and is lined in beige felt. The tiny purse is very lady like. The shoes are enhanced by a covering of matching fabric.
