Challenge Two

The shoes that inspired me are simple, but include two elements that I was excited to mirror in my outfit: the asymmetry of both the shape and embellishment, and the juxtaposition of casual, top stitched, "rock'n'roll" leather with the elegance and femininity of diamonds.  She is a woman that loves to keep everyone around her guessing as to whether she's one to beware of, or one to be captivated by...

Challenge Three

This design was inspired by a kimono exhibit that came to our local museum this summer.  Along with some traditional kimono details like hand-painting, I added some elements that normally aren't included: lace, buttons, beads, tassels, grommets, lacing and a non-crossover front.  Let's just say it's my own interpretation of a "classic" (and made in my favorite color, no less).

Challenge Four

I drew my inspiration from my recent discovery that the swan was used to symbolize Napoleon's wife, Josephine.  As I was also dying to make a dramatic neck ruff, I changed the "shape" of the swan a little bit to indulge this.  This challenge "challenged" me to learn how to trim and sew with feathers, and also covered my house with a thin layer of white feathers and down!  (I dedicate this creation to my poor husband, who is apparently allergic to these feathers and has been congested and sneezing all week!)

Challenge Five

I wanted my celebrity to have a long, formal gown for an event like the Oscars, but made the long skirt detachable so that she could dance and have fun at the after party without being inhibited by the extra fabric.  Her beaded, one-shoulder straps give her a bit of interest, without being so over-the-top that she would risk landing on the "what was she thinking?" list.

I used a Fashion Royalty doll (this is the first time I've ever sewn for one!) for this challenge.  I think she has such a glamorous Halle Berry-meets-Marilyn Monroe look about her, and will be sure to turn heads in this gown.

Challenge Six

In this outfit, Audrey is headed to her New England cottage for a weekend of rest and relaxation.  The shirtdress shows off her trim figure, stunning shoulders and collarbone, and the comfy leggings show off her beautiful, long legs.  She's ready to kick off her heals and walk on the beach in the afternoon, and throw on her sweater when the night air gets a little chillier.

Challenge Seven

This stunning character is Dolores, a 1960s housewife who is taking a rare and much-needed evening off from her 5 adoring children to accompany her husband to his company Christmas party.  Although Dolores is conservative, and somewhat of a wallflower, she still revels in the excitement of dressing up in something a little fancier than her plain, cotton dress and apron.

Dolores is inspired by my maternal grandmother (of the same name), whom I never did have the privilege of meeting, but who I can imagine fitting this image pretty closely.

The gold fabric of the dress was from a vintage 1960s dress that I found at a thrift shop.

Challenge Eight

Sarah was flying from San Diego to Portland, Maine to visit her parents, when she got stranded overnight at JFK Airport (NY) with only her carry-on.
Already dressed comfortably in her ruched black & grey striped tunic tank, black leggings, cozy fuchsia hoodie and lacey scarf, she decided to make the most of the extended layover and caught a cab into Manhattan to meet up with some of her girlfriends that reside in SOHO. She pulled her tunic down to mini-dress length, left her hoodie and leggings at their apartment and threw on a bracelet for a hip clubbing ensemble.
Her full transition wasn't completed until later in the evening when the girls decided to crash a cocktail party going on at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. In the hotel restroom, all she had to do was turn her reversible dress inside out to make it a sleek black mini-dress, spread her scarf out to make a shoulder wrap, and add some color & interest with a long necklace.
The next morning, back in her casual airplane outfit and finally reunited with her checked luggage, she would step off the plane in Portland where her parents had no idea the mischief she'd gotten into the night before...
