Challenge Two
My choice of shoes is a pair of two tone red and black high heels.
The shoes are perfect for a Piet Mondrian inspired block colored dress.
It is just coincidental that my second entry also reflects the year 1965.
The shift dress I created is made of four cotton fabrics with different prints.
1. a red fabric with tiny white polka dots
2. a black fabric and white checked print
3. plain white cotton
4. plain black cotton
The dress is constructed in blocks of fabrics, with the plain black material forming several borders.
The knee length shift dress has a jewel neckline and is sleeveless.
Dress is fully lined in white cotton and closes with metal snaps at the back.
Accessories that I made include a bracelet and necklace which are made of multifaceted red, white and black beads and red stud earrings.
Sunglasses and stocking are borrowed from another doll.
My model is Milano of the Alexander Fairchild Ford line from Madame Alexander. Milano stands fifteen and one half inches tall.
Challenge Three
My inspiration for the third challenge of embellishment was my fabric. I wanted to create a garment that would be suitable for this lovely sequined material, and show it to its glamorous potential.
The all over sequined material is used for the top of a two piece gown eveningwear set. The top has a curved hemline, and an over one shoulder neckline. Gold cording trims the neckline and hemline edges of the top. The garment was completely hand sewn. The top is lined with beige cotton and closes at the back with a zipper. The very full skirt is constructed from a polyester fabric that has gold metallic threads entwined within it. The skirt has a waist band and fastens at the back with a metal snap.
A simple wrap is made from the same fabric as the skirt.
I constructed a necklace of tiny beads that would not compete with the dress material, and the doll wears purchased shoes. The lovely Milano is my model.
Challenge Four
My inspiration for the “On the Edge of Fashion” challenge came from a clue received for the challenge. Casual led me to want to work with denim and the first garment that came to mind was jeans. I found distressed denim and had my starting fabric. I already had an idea for jeans but did not want my outfit to be the traditional pant. I did want the lower part of the outfit to be the focal point. I have created a hip cape over the left hip from the distressed denim. Hemline edges are trimmed with a black and white gathered lace. Red thread hand stitching is used for an accent along the outer edges and the side seam. The hip cape is lined with navy lining fabric. The shorts and halter top are constructed from floral print red cotton. The halter top is lined with the same floral fabric and has a trim of black lace on the lower edge. Garments close at the back with snaps.
The oversized hat is constructed of the same distressed denim. So often, large hats look like lampshades and my inspiration for the trims came from that. I trimmed the edges of the wide brim with fringed black braid and then an oversized red rickrack.
Two bracelets are constructed from larger beads strung on elastic thread, one black and the one red and black. Black stud earrings are also accessories.
Stockings and shoes are purchased. Ellowyne Wilde is my model.
Challenge Five
A red carpet event outfit should always be a gown and have elegance.
I chose fall colors because this event is happening now, in November, the challenge.
My inspiration came from a number of gowns I have seen stars wearing.
I have created a gown and short jacket for my outfit.
The gown is constructed from chocolate colored taffeta that has a sheen to it.
The bodice has a deep cut princess neckline, and there is a full length bias cut skirt.
The ecru colored braid and beaded straps are not just over the shoulder, but fit under the bust.
The fabric used for the jacket has a paisley print in green, gold and red and the fabric also has a sheen.
The slightly fitted jacket is waistlength and has long sleeves. Jacket does not fasten. Facings finish the edges.
Clutch handbag is made form the same fabric as the gown.
Necklace is constucted from a variety of sizes and colors of green beads. Green stud earrings.
My model is an American Model from Tonner. Doll wears purchased shoes and stockings.
Challenge Six
My inspiration for the outfit was taken from the many looks of Audrey Hepburn, and therefore I took the 1960s day dress but updated it.
I wanted to created a dress that would reflect Hepburn's elegance and her put together look.
I created a sleeveless shift dress that has a fitted princess style bodice and a flared skirt.
The fabric is a polyester blend with a black background and multicoloured polka dots all over it.
I choose a black fabric because a couple of Audrey's famous movie gowns were black and white.
Dress is fully lined in black satin and closure is metal snaps at the back.
Accessories: (that I created)
- a black leather belt with an ornate closure
- a black leather faux purse with a long handle of tiny black beads and a silver bead to represent a clasp
- necklace and bracelet from round, white pearl beads (white as to not clash with colourful polka dots), and white stud earrings.
Black shoes and stocking are purchased.
My model is Ellowyne Wilde.
Challenge Seven
For her appearance on the episode of Mad Men entitled the Cocktail Party, my model is wearing a navy and white polka dot halter style dress.
Since the show takes its fashion from the early 1960s, my inspiration was a little bit from Marilyn Monroe’s grate scene dress from 1955.
The dress has a gathered midriff, and a six panel flared skirt. Front of the skirt has the look of an inverted pleat.
The bodice and midriff sections are lined with the same fabric but the skirt is unlined.
The halter style bodice is wide over the shoulders.
My model is the lovely Clea Bella doll.
Accessories that I created are the double stranded pearl necklace, bracelet, stud earrings and handbag.
Shoes and stocking are purchased.
